For the second time in a little more than two weeks a house has been set on fire in our great country because the resident wanted to get rid of a spider. The first incident occurred in late June in Hutchinson, Kansas when a woman set paper towels on fire in an effort to get a spider and ended up starting a series of small fires in her half of a duplex.

Not to be outdone, a Seattle, Washington man decided what was missing in the Kansas woman’s plan was an accelerant.  This happened yesterday (Tuesday) evening around 8:30 on 34th Avenue when the resident went after the spider armed with a cigarette lighter and a can of spray paint. While it is uncertain if the man caught the spider it is certain he did about $60,000 to the rental home.

Firefighters originally battled the blaze from a distance after learning there may be ammunition inside. Crews were eventually able to extinguish the fire, but not before it did significant damage to the structure.

A man who lived at the home told fire officials he was trying to kill a spider in his laundry room using a can of spray paint and a lighter when the wall caught fire, according to Kyle Moore with the Seattle Fire Department. The man wasn’t able to put the fire out himself, and he left the home when it began to spread.
