Christine Dempsey, The Courtant:

Sweet-smelling smoke continued to rise Friday from the rubble of a massive fire that destroyed two businesses — one of which housed industrial perfumes.

The five-alarm fire bent metal and sparked a series of explosions that toppled brick walls. Fireballs blasted 100 feet into the air. The fire was reported at 6:45 p.m. and burned for hours.

Flames reached over and through power lines, threatening nearby homes and damaging siding and roofs. Some 400 people were forced out of their homes, although most were back Friday. Swimming and fishing bans were put in place in Bridgeport Harbor because of the runoff.
