Eleven companies in the Paterson Fire Department responded to a call of a “heavy fire” at 523 Union Ave. about 4:40 a.m. on Sunday. The fire then spread to the neighboring building, scorching the right side of 525 Union Ave. and forcing the relocation of at least seven people.

Upon the department’s arrival, all three floors of the building were ablaze, Deputy Chief Frank Calamita said. Firefighters entered the building for a “primary search” for victims, but the flames rapidly grew larger and department members needed to retreat from the building, Calamita |said.
