Hit & run driver kills veteran firefighter in front of NJ firehouse

A longtime veteran of the Somerville Fire Department was struck and killed in a hit-and-run outside of a fire house Friday night, according to borough police.

George Kavanaugh, 75, was found lying outside of the Lincoln Hose Company Fire House on Warren Street at around 9:30, Somerville police said in a news release. Police said it appeared he had been hit by a motor vehicle.

He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital-Somerset by the Somerville Rescue Squad, where he was pronounced dead.

Kavanaugh was the former chief of the Somerville Fire Department in 1985 and 1986. He was a member of Engine Company No. 1 and a trustee of the Somerville Fire Department Relief Association.

He held various leadership positions within the Somerville Fire Department. He was also a life member of the state’s Firemen’s Association.

The Somerville Police Department along with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) is investigating the accident.
