Burt Clark

Dr. Clark retired from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, May 2014 after 45 years in the fire service. His career began as a firefighter in Washington DC, Prince George’s County, and Carroll County Maryland. Clark also served as a Maryland Fire Rescue Institute Instructor and a Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University.

The book is a collection of 45 selected essays (from more than 200 published articles) written during his career.  Clark drew on his vast experience, research, and training to compile what he believes are the best topics firefighters and civilians must know to better save their lives.

From his first fire in 1970, at the Kentland Fire Department Company 33, the busiest volunteer fire department in the country, to his farewell speech in 2014 at the National Fire Academy Burt taught more than 500 courses with more than 10,000 graduates.

Burt’s goal for writing I Can’t Save You, But I’ll Die Trying: The American Fire Culture is to change the way society perceives fire deaths, “When a civilian is killed by fire it is not an act of God and when a firefighter is killed it is not part of the job. When there is a fire death something went wrong. The public as well as the fire service can all do better to prevent fires and save lives.”

Come learn about our American Fire Culture past, present and future from one of the nation’s most thought provoking fire education leaders.

Dr. Clark will autograph books, a portion of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and the National Fire Service Heritage Center.

Locally, the book is available at Dublin Roasters Coffee House and O’Leary’s Emporium located at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, and from the publisher direct by calling 1-800-891-7323, or go to orders@premiumpressamerica.com.
