Tuesday evening crews were dispatched to the Buckeye Tavern on Brookside Road for a reported structure fire, first arriving officer reports a working fire. Several minutes into the fight a 2nd alarm was struck and crews went into a defensive posture. Crews had heavy fire on the top floors and through the roof with a total collapse of the upper levels multiple master streams and elevated streams were placed in service to knock the fire. Crews had the fire under control in about an hour however would remain on scene most of the night to make sur the fire is completely out and for the investigation.
According to officials, the blaze broke out at approximately 7:33 p.m. No injuries have been reported.
It took but minutes for a fire to devastate the local landmark that has survived the test of time for nearly 300 years.
The tavern was built in colonial times in 1735.
According to the tavern’s web site the building has been the site of a neighborhood eatery ever since 1768. The building has had 19 owners over the centuries.
