Captain David Meyer of Truck 29 has December to his injuries from a fire this morning on west Crystal. He joins CFD in 1996 he leaves his wife daughters and a son. Please keep his family in your thoughts. (Lankford)
The Chicago Fire Department said they were called to 5505 West Crystal around 5 a.m. Video from the scene showed flames and heavy smoke billowing from the garage.
A mayday call soon went out for a firefighter who was injured in the response. Chicago fire officials said he was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition where sources said he later died.
The garage collapsed in the fire, causing a beam to fall on a firefighter, according to the Chicago Fire Department. No further details were immediately available.
