Video from Steven Matto as firefighters set up defensive operations on a house fire yesterday (Friday) with thousands of rounds of ammunition cooking off. News reports indicate there were more than 20 thousand rounds in the home in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania (Westmoreland County).
“We waited until we didn’t hear any shells going off for 10 minutes before we sent any crews inside,” Chief Dunmire told the Post-Gazette. ”We’ve encountered that before, with shells and ammo going off, but not to this extent.”
Crews battled the fire from the outside of the home of a gun-collector for about 30 minutes.
Chief Dunmire said crews salvaged more than 100 guns, forming a daist chain to pass them out of the house.
