A large fire at a liquid-recycling plant in south Phoenix spewed a large column of black smoke Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters reported that the three-alarm blaze near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road had sparked multiple explosions and that some small barrels stored there had turned into projectiles. About 100 people were evacuated from the immediate area.
The fire scorched two businesses with the same owner, Solvent Recy-Clean and SRC Oil and Fuel, which recycles oil, gasoline, jet fuel and other materials. It also supplies reprocessed fuel oil to paving companies and to refineries that make lube oils, its website says.
