Fairfax County Lieutenant on the Mend After Being Saved by his Crew
There is good news from the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department, but they still aren’t saying much officially about the details. All spokesperson Renee Stillwell was able to confirm late Sunday afternoon is that a firefighter collapsed Saturday while on PT in Huntley Meadows Park and that he was revived by his fellow firefighters.
Much more in the way of details is coming from department sources who are not authorized to speak about the incident. As STATter 911 first reported, this involved the crew from Rescue 411 at Penn Daw.
According to the sources, the firefighters were out for a jog in the Park. The crew had apparently separated a bit during the run. That’s when one of the firefighters came across his lieutenant on the ground in cardiac arrest.
The rest of the crew heard the call on the radio and ran over with the EMS equipment. We are told the AED advised a shock. According to the sources, a combination of two shocks, CPR and finally a pericardial thump brought the lieutenant back. The sources say he was sitting up and talking in his hospital room later in the day.
Our sources say among those working to save the lieutenant were some of his closest friends.
