The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star is reporting that Caroline County Fire & Rescue Director Ed Fuzy has resigned. Deputy Director Mark Garnett is taking over for the interim. Here are excerpts from the article:

County Administrator Percy Ashcraft said Fuzy submitted his resignation Friday. The decision came after a meeting with Ashcraft last week, the county administrator said in a news release.

Fuzy was hired as director in 2002. He is the third person to hold the position since it was created in the 1990s by the Board of Supervisors.

Ashcraft said Fuzy’s resignation offers an opportunity to establish clear direction and policy in county fire and rescue services. He said he would confer with supervisors in the coming weeks on whether to hire a new director or establish the new position of fire chief instead.

A recent study on improving fire and rescue operations in the county recommended creating the fire chief position, and Ashcraft included that when he presented his proposed budget for the coming fiscal year to supervisors last week.

“We will move quickly to establish stability within the fire and rescue operations,” Ashcraft said in the release. “The heart of our system is the volunteer companies. We need to get better at tying together the career and volunteer efforts.”
