Man charged with biting off tip of paramedic’s finger. Chicago medic was first on the scene of “person down” that turned out to be a domestic battle.

This happened Sunday morning at 12:57 AM when the call was dispatched for a person down in the 2600 block of West Cermak Road. Excerpts from the Chicago Sun-Times:

A man has been charged with battery after allegedly biting the tip of a paramedic’s finger off early Sunday as the paramedic attempted to protect a woman from being beaten in the Southwest Side’s Little Village neighborhood, authorities said.

Jose Gutierrez, 25, of the 2500 block of West 40th Street, was charged with one count of domestic battery and one count of aggravated battery to first aid personnel, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

Upon arrival, the paramedic immediately saw a woman being beaten by her boyfriend, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said. Since the paramedic was the first to respond to the scene, he attempted to intervene and the man bit off about one-fourth of the tip of his right thumb, he said

Police said the 27-year-old male paramedic was treated for the bite wound and a fractured finger.
