The gunman suspected of shooting at two Fremont, California police officers and then barricading himself inside of a burning house has died, firefighters confirmed to NBC Bay Area on Thursday.
The man’s death, announced about 8:20 a.m., came after an overnight standoff that included Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies and Fremont police trying to flush him out with tear gas in a home on Roberts Avenue in the Irvington district.
The tear gas accidentally started a fire inside the home after the cannisters were thrown in, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly. The home was vacant at the time, authorities said, adding that they called the man’s parents to the scene to try to speak with him and get him to come out.
A tense barricade situation continues at a Fremont home where police have pinned down the suspect they believe is responsible for shooting two Fremont police officers on Wednesday. One of the officers is in critical condition while the other is stable.
The home is within the containment perimeter set up following the shooting. Gas was fired into the home and it is now on fire. Firefighters are trying to extinguish the blaze and protect surrounding homes. The fire department reports via Twitter, “This is a defensive fire. No firefighters going inside.”
